-Does the NEA’s agenda reflect your values?

-Does it reflect the values of Utah’s teachers?

-NEA President Becky Pringle’s recent speech raises a critical question: Do we want this ideology shaping our children’s education?

Kids Not Unions

Keep schools focused on student success, not union agendas.

Teacher unions are trying to overturn HB267, a law that keeps education focused on students, not union politics. Don’t let them undermine what matters most—our kids. Say NO to repealing HB267. Decline to sign the referendum.

HB267 enjoys broad support.

A majority of voters, regardless of political affiliation, back the changes introduced in the bill.

    • HB267 allows each government employee to negotiate for raises and benefits on their own behalf.

    • Bans taxpayer funded paid leave for government union activity.

    • Requires government unions to pay for spaces that others must pay for.

    • Requires unions to report to the state labor commission the money they spend on political activities and the number of members.

    • Provides professional liability insurance for teachers.

    • Maintains government employees’ ability to join a union and participate in union activities.

    • Requires government unions to get employees’ permission to deduct union dues from their paychecks.

HB267 keeps union politics out of schools, ensuring that resources, transparency, and teacher empowerment serve one purpose–supporting students and their success.

HB267: Putting Students First, Not Politics

Schools should be able to focus on what truly matters—students. By prioritizing education over politics, schools will be able to adapt, reward great educators, and direct tax dollars where they belong–supporting student success.

UEA Fought Against Teacher Pay Raises—Utah Lawmakers Delivered Anyway

HB267 isn’t just good for students—it’s good for teachers, too. By removing union roadblocks, it ensures that great educators are valued, fairly compensated, and empowered to do what they do best: teach.

For years, Utah’s legislature prioritized teacher pay, but much of the funding was diverted to administration. The unions, despite claiming to advocate for teachers, failed to stop this misuse, so lawmakers bypassed districts to ensure teachers receive direct, consistent raises every year.

It’s revealing that Utah’s teacher union, the UEA, opposed the 2023 and 2024 bills that provided direct pay raises for teachers. In 2025 lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to teachers and student success, elevating Utah to 2nd in the nation for starting teacher salaries and 26th for overall pay—all done in spite of the UEA.

History of Legislative Funding Increases for Education

    • 2023: The Utah Fits All bill provided teachers with a $6,000 raise–opposed by the UEA.

    • 2024: Lawmakers passed critical funding bills–again without union support:

    • HB221: $8.4 million in grants for student teachers

    • HB431: $4.8 million for a mentorship program with master teachers

    • SB173: Performance-based bonuses up to $10,000, with matching pay for teachers in high-poverty schools

    • 2025: Lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to teachers and student success, passing another round of historic investments.

    • $1,446 salary increase for teachers

    • $1,000 bonus for education support staff

    • 4% funding increase for all school district employees

    • $77.7M for educator professional time

    • $65M for Career & Technical Education grants

    • $14.3M for teacher supplies & materials

    • $12.4M for Future Educators stipends

    • $7.3M for Grow Your Own Educator grants

    • $795K for professional liability insurance support

UEA’s Agenda: Power, Politics, and Paychecks—Not Students or Teachers

The teacher unions are not interested in student success, fair teacher pay, or the fact that Utah now ranks 2nd in the nation for starting salaries. Every one of these achievements happened in spite of their opposition.

Their push to overturn HB267 isn’t about helping teachers or students—it’s about protecting their power over Utah’s education system. They want to continue to:

    • Use taxpayer dollars to fund union activities

    • Avoid transparency about their political involvement

    • Force their social justice agenda into Utah schools (see here)

The UEA actively promotes DEI initiatives that many parents see as contrary to Utah’s values. They even dedicate an entire page on their website to social justice activism while training teachers in these ideologies. These union-backed educators then bring political agendas into the classroom, prioritizing activism over academic excellence. Their focus isn’t on improving education – it’s on pushing their ideology.

Until HB267, our tax dollars helped fund the UEA, which funneled money to the NEA—a political organization working to undermine parental influence in education.

HB267 is crucial to ending the power and influence of teacher unions on Utah’s schools. It’s time to put kids first and focus our tax dollars and resources on creating an education system that prioritizes student success, rewards great teachers, and keeps political agendas out of the classroom.
